Call for Applications: Afternoon Teacher

Newtowne School, a Reggio Emilia-inspired, family cooperative preschool in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is expanding its faculty as a result of an exciting partnership with the Cambridge Preschool Program. We are seeking part-time afternoon teachers to provide Reggio-inspired education and care across our school. This position is for the academic year (September-June) with the possibility of serving as an occasional substitute teacher in the mornings and/or joining the 6-week summer program (July-mid August).

 

 

Primary Job Duties & Responsibilities

The Afternoon Teacher works with children ages 22 months to 5 years in any of our four classrooms during lunch, rest, and playful afternoon programming. This role requires flexibility and close collaboration with all faculty, including the Atelierista, Inclusion Specialist, School Coordinator, and Executive Director. It can include creative opportunities to support planning, curriculum development, and documentation for school-wide projects. Additional responsibilities include attending faculty meetings and professional development, as well as other duties assigned by the Leadership Team.

To ensure the safety and needs of students, candidates must be able to regularly lift and carry up to 10lbs., frequently lift and carry up to 25 lbs., and occasionally lift and carry up to 50 lbs., communicate with children at eye-level, climb stairs, and take walks in the community up to half a mile of distance. Newtowne School is committed to outdoor experiences; the ability to supervise and interact with children outdoors for extended periods of time in varied weather conditions (snow, rain, and heat) is required.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidates will have many of the following:

  • Massachusetts EEC Preschool or Infant/Toddler Lead Teacher certification (both preferred) or equivalent

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in education, child development, or related field

  • At least three years of early childhood classroom experience

  • Appreciation of observation, reflection, and documentation in educational practice

  • Dedication to anti-bias and anti-racist curriculum and commitment to teaching for social justice

  • Experience supporting students with special rights

  • Previous involvement in a cooperative preschool and/or navigating home-school partnerships

  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Interest and/or experience in progressive, Reggio-inspired educational settings
